St ALi, South Melbourne. Heck yes.
St ALi. Yarra Place. South Melbourne. I am addicted.
There’s not many times I ever open my mouth to say “that’s the best <insert appropriately overwhelmingly good stuff> I’ve ever had” - but I’m staking claim right now: St ALi has the best coffee I have tasted in a long time. And I’m excited. So excited I could almost wet myself with happiness.
I ventured out on a late Sunday, with Boy Wonder, and thought I’d give this place a try. On tasting the coffee, the Boy started to get very excited and animated - kinda cute, kinda like an excited jack russell puppy (Look at me! Look at me!). But I was in the zone. Tastebuds were in overdrive. I think I was nodding at him, I can’t be sure. Perhaps he was telling me he ran over a dog, I just nodded. Blissed out. Sure honey, whatever. I, meanwhile, was wondering on my first sip: should I order another latte: NOW.
It must have been good. I returned a week later. And then a couple days after that. Since then, I have just fantasised about it. I drive past the lane most days and have to force myself not pull the car over for another caffeine hit.
Food wise, on St ALi’s menu everything on it makes your salivary glands go into overdrive. I ate the mushroom burger: nom freakin nom. Days later after a horrendous nights sleep, I detoured to St ALi’s before work - promptly ordered a coffee and the grilled asparagus, serrano ham, poached eggs with truffled oil. Now I’m no doctor, but screw Zoloft. The minute I drank, and the moment the plate hit the table - the intoxicating, heady smell of truffle - I couldn’t get my stupid grin off my face.
Angelina greets and meets on the floor and is so welcoming, you find yourself plotting your next return. Getting a table on weekends is a bit of a wait, but there’s always the takeaway option - I’m not a sweet tooth but just make sure you get a mini cupcake to go.
Satisfied.
